How many
people think about the reality of death? Most people hold the idea that they will for a
very long time-maybe 20, 30 or 40 years more to live.
Each one of
us is busy planning and organizing our lives with the view that we will live for a very
long time. If we are young we are busy with our friends enjoying ourselves and
seeking more
enjoyment and fun. The rest of our time is filled studying, going to coaching
centers and doing various courses.
If we are
older our whole life is consumed in applying for jobs or working day and night.
Our aim is
to become ‘established’ at whatever cost.
Today we
don’t have the few minutes in our lives to think about the most basic questions
about live
itself. We were not here a few years ago nor will we be here for eternity. Live
has a
beginning and an end. Yet we go through live just like an animal satisfying our
material
needs.
Death is a
reality. We cannot escape it. And more importantly none of us know when death will
come to us. It is nonsense to think that we will live till 60 or 65 when we see
people
around us dying at every age. Who has told us that we will live till 65? This
is our imagination!
Allah (SWT) tells us in Surah Al-lmran:
“Every soul
shall have a taste of death”
Islam deals
with the basic realities of man. It gives man the intellectual answers to the most
fundamental questions about life. Allah (SWT) created this life; He (SWT)
determines
our life span and He (SWT) will account us for our actions in the Hereafter
on the day of
Judgment.
How can we
go through life blindly without thinking, pondering and contemplating about our
existence, our purpose in life and where we are about to go?
Once we
understand intellectually these questions i.e. we understand that life is not forever and
that we are going to Allah (SWT) then we cannot go through life just doing
whatever
gives us pleasure. We must realize that Allah (SWT) created us for a purpose and that fulfilling that purpose is our aim in
life.
